Worlds Busiest Airport Shut Down For GeoSurvey
Well almost! A field crew from GeoSurvey, Ltd worked on Runway 08R at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport with a team throughout the night to position the new Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI). The PAPI system informs the incoming aircraft if they are in the correct vertical angle of approach several miles out from the runway. To perform the work, Runway 08R at the Atlanta Airport was shut down from midnight to 6:00 am. Among other tasks, the GeoSurvey team had to field survey a significant portion of the actual centerline of the runway. The immense size of the Atlanta Airport is even more obvious when you have the opportunity to drive a vehicle down the runway from one end to the other. Even though the scope of work was relatively simple, it was nice to see a contract requiring a registered land surveyor be a part of the layout team.
